Bye,Bye Stan

Steve Staunton has been kicked out of Coventry City. The former Irish international defender failed to turn up for training on Friday and as he gave no reason for his absence, Micky Adams had no choice but to withdraw the offer.

Hardly the most popular player City have ever had and one who became the last ever professional player booked at Highfield Road, Staunton played 33 times (3 sub) for City last season and scored against Brighton.

Increasingly beaten for pace, the former Villa defender moved to centre half where he finished the season strongly, causing him to be offered a one year deal.

Micky Adams told the CET: "The offer has been withdrawn so he won't be coming back. "I spoke to him this morning and I wish him well wherever he goes. "I am disappointed because I genuinely thought he played well for me in the centre half position at the end of last season. But there has to come a time when enough is enough.

"He's has two months to sort out his future and contract from when I first spoke to him in early May and now I've had to make a decision which is that I will use the money freed up by his wages to bring in a younger centre half.

"He's a great lad and I've got no problem with him because he's been a magnificent pro since I have been here at the club. "But I have had to make a decision because Stan didn't show, for whatever reasons and I have started negotiating else where with a defender and I am not prepared to back down on that."
