Coventry City will not face Championship visits to either Birmingham City or Norwich City next season.

The Sky Blues, who finished 17th after a 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town this afternoon will not meet Birmingham City who attained automatic promotion with a 2-1 win at Reading.

Jay Tabb played in the match which sees Reading in the play-offs and Birmingham in the Premier League.

Sheffield United drew 0-0 at Crystal Palace to clinch their play-off place with Coventrian Graham Alexander scoring twice for Burnley in a 4-0 win over Bristol City. The other play-off place was snatched by Preston who beat QPR 2-1.

Cardiff lost at Sheffield Wednesday and because Preston had scored a goal more, they will have the fourth play off slot.

At the other end of the table, Charlton Athletic scored four goals at home on the last day of the season for the second consecutive season. Last season, they nearly sent down the Sky Blues but this year their goals in a 4-2 win were enough to relegate Norwich City.

Norwich were down due to Barnsley winning 2-1 at Plymouth.

Relegated Southampton lost 3-1 at Nottingham Forest whilst Blackpool won 1-0 at Swansea and Champions Wolves beat Doncaster 1-0.

In the Premier League, Iain Dowie's Newcastle United remain in deep trouble after a 3-0 defeat at Liverpool.
