Coventry City U23’s made it three wins out of three in 2019 with a well fought for 1-0 victory over Watford.

An unusually pleasant January afternoon, saw the City supporters, scouts and agents, watching a first half which was turgid to say the least with the referee Scott Simpson, proving he was no homer by booking Josh Eccles for an innocuous challenge inside the opening twenty-five minutes which were mainly played around the middle third of the pitch.

Shortly after the booking of a player, who for me was City’s man of the match with an excellent work rate and a battling spirit that we all love to see, Tom Bilson pulled off a cracking save from an Ashley Charles free kick.

City had problems getting into the final third with Mukena and Tricker, who both played well for the Hornets, keeping Big Dave Bremang who was playing alone up front, in check

Bremang did get through in the 37th minute when he pounced on a great ball from McCallum but fired over and it was goal-less at the break.

Whatever City U23’s coach Jason Farndon said at half-time seemed to work as the Sky Blues were far more determined in a second half, littered with cards and a display of overscrupulous officiating which at times lacked commonsense.

Bremang was played in by Jack Burroughs in the 64th minute but Adam Parkes, the visiting goalkeeper saved well.

It proved to be third time lucky for David Bremang as in the 67th minute, he was sent clear again by a McCallum ball and this time rounded Parkes to score before celebrating with his team mates.

City attacked again and won a 70th minute corner. Camwell’s flag kick was met by Morgan Williams and he struck the crossbar. The ball came down and there was Williams again to strike the crossbar for a second time.

The bar denied City in the 78th minute meaning that it was only a 1-0 victory for the Sky Blues, who have won all of their games this month.
