Blaze Take Basingstoke Beating

Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey team were beaten for the second time this weekend with a 4-1 home defeat to Basingstoke Bison.

Things started badly for the Blaze at the Sky Dome with Basingstoke taking a two goal lead early in the first period. Matt Millar opened the scoring after 3.51 and then Danny Stewart netted from an assist by Brent Hughes after 7.43.

Paul Thompson's side had twenty shots compared to Basingstoke's ten in the opening period but fell further behind when Danny Stewart scored assisted by Hughes and Read on a powerplay due to Carlyle Lewis getting two minutes for hooking on 26.04. Seven minutes later and Stewart completed his hat-trick when he scored unassisted.

Adam Calder ended the shut-out when he pulled one back after 37.44 assisted by Sylvain Deschalets and Jon Weaver on a powerplay.

The Blaze and a good number of their supporters will be heading out to Italy for the Continental Cup in Bolzano.

Coventry have the first of three games on Friday when they take on Stavbar Maribor from Slovenia at 4pm. Saturday sees a game against Hungarian side Dunaujvaros at 4pm and Bolzano Foxes at 7.30pm on Sunday night. BBC Coventry & Warwickshire will be providing live commentary of the three matches.
