Martin Cranie said that he spoke to former Southampton team-mate Leon Best about him joining Coventry City.

"Bestie had told me a lot about the club and as soon as I'd had a chat with Chris Coleman and had a look round I knew this was the place for me," said Cranie to the CT.

"I'd been in for a talk with the gaffer at Portsmouth and from what he said I knew I would struggle to get games at Portsmouth and I wanted regular football - so I was delighted to sign for Coventry because the set-up here is brilliant.

The defender started against Barnsley and he said:
"I thought the gaffer might put me on the bench. "I didn't really expect to go straight in because I'd never played or even trained with them before, but he called me in on Friday night and said 'you're going to start.'

"I got my head round it pretty quickly because they're a good set of lads - there was a lot of talking on the pitch so I adapted pretty quickly.

"I thought partnership with Turner looked pretty good and it was great to have an experienced player like Stephen Wright alongside me.

"I'd played at Barnsley before and it's a hard place to go but we were on top from the start - we got an early goal and took it from there."
