Former Coventry City forward Craig Bellamy was ambushed by a five strong gang after coming out of a Cardiff night club.

According to The Sun, Bellamy had been in the Eden Lounge in Cardiff on Saturday night when according to an onlooker, he was asked for an autograph then challenged to a bizarre sprint race. This ended with a bruised Bellamy being reported as 'trading punches with his attackers' before jumping into a taxi.

Police are appealing for witnesses and a source told The Sun: "Craig was set upon. They surrounded him and were goading him. He lashed out and clobbered one of them.

"He did get hit and now has bruising on his forehead. "His friends came out soon afterwards - he doesn't really know what happened then.

"There was no question of him being drunk. He had just a couple of beers. "Police have not spoken to him - though he expects they will get in contact."
