The fate of the Casino at the Arena complex is likely to be decided today. Amendments to the Gambling Bill are expected to see between six and ten casinos given the go ahead. The Isle of Capri face a battle between themselves,Birmingham and Wolverhampton to host the one regional casino likely to be permitted under the new Bill.

There has been much opposition to the Bill with a number of Labour back benchers against casinos as well as the Daily Mail.

Speaking to Reuters Press Agency,Iain Wilkie, head of hospitality and leisure at management consultants Ernst & Young, said: "There is a good chance that existing operators like Stanley Leisure, Britain's biggest casino operator, would be among the first wave of listed companies allowed to open up big new regional casinos.

"The winners will be the existing operators, particularly those that have the appetite to get into casinos like Stanley, so long as the sites they have identified are going to be those that have the opportunity to get one of these relatively rare licences,"

He added: "Stanley Leisure said on October 18 it planned to spend 125 million pounds building a casino in Leeds next to Leeds United's soccer stadium. The site would be similar to its Star City casino in Birmingham. "Stanley Leisure might get lucky."

Plans to have a casino in the new Bond Street development in Coventry City centre are also expected to be dropped.
