Andy Whing The Match Day Guest

Last updated : 16 October 2016 By CCFPA

The Coventry City Former Players Association (CCFPA) is pleased to announce that former Sky Blue Andrew Whing will be our ‘special guest’ for CCFC’s uesday night match (18th October 2016) against his current club Oxford United at the Ricoh under floodlights.

Though he is bound to have somewhat divided loyalties for this particular game, Andy joined this Association in 2012 and it is not the first time he has taken up the duties of our ‘special guest’. He will, no doubt, be interested to see how well the players of his old club manage against his current employers who are currently mid table in League One. Despite their lowly position the Sky Blues reamin unbeaten in League One at the Ricoh this season and will be hoping to get a third successive home victory on Tuesday night to capitalise on their recent mini revival and rise up the table. Added interest comes from the fact that the U’s may feature a trio of former Sky Blues, Aaron Martin, Chris Maguire and Josh Ruffels!

Andy then & Andy Now

Andy then & Andy Now

A Brummy, but at CCFC for a decade from a schoolboy in 1997, Andy made his debut at right back in 2003 making 119 first team appearances (two goals) before being released in May 2007. He achieved an important place in the club history books by scoring the Sky Blues’ last ever league goal at their old Highfield Road ground in a 6-2 victory over local rivals Derby County in 2005 (below).

Subsequently Andy played for Brighton and Hove Albion, Chesterfield (on loan), Leyton Orient (after a loan spell) and his last (and current) club Oxford United where he won ‘player of the year’ in 2010.

Andy WhingAndy made over 100 appearances for the United between 2010-15 when injury forced his retirement and he firmly remains a fans favourite at the Kassem Stadium, currently employed there as joint youth team coach at our League One rivals.

Look out for Andy in the various supporters’ lounges prior to the game and on the stage of Lady Gs in the G-Casino for a Q&A with CCFPA’s Billy Bell after the game is over. Andy will also be assisting the BBC CWR live matchday commentary team during the game as it unfolds to those supporters who cannot make it to the Ricoh on Saturday.     Welcome Andy!
