Anderson Trying To Look At Short And Long Term

Coventry City MD has said that he is looking at both the short term and long term future of the Sky Blues.

Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner, Mr Anderson said: “What’s important to understand is we’re trying to do two things at the same time,” said Anderson, who admitted the club had been guilty of taking a short-term view in the past.

“We’re trying to always be competitive at first-team level and have a very good team that produces successful football that puts us in a position to win promotion while, at the same time, we’re building the foundations for a really healthy football club.

“There has been some deferred maintenance of the football club over the years so one of the things Mark Venus and I are trying to put in place both on the commercial and the football side is that healthy foundation.

"And healthy resources that come into the club, such as from a player’s sale, are resources that will be really valuable in putting that foundation in place.

“So as we keep moving forward and are successful as a first team we are set up to capitalise on that success. Imagine we are promoted to the Championship; we want to have a football operation in place that can contend and cope with the higher level of competition in the next division up.

“There’s always a trade-off between the short term and longer term. Do you use every pound that comes into the business to look for immediate success on the pitch or do you use some of that money to help build success over the longer term?

“And I think football clubs often get in trouble when they exclusively value the short-term success because then the longer-term foundations are never put in place or are neglected and then when you do lose some games or have a bad season, all of a sudden you’re in deep trouble.

"This is a football club that doesn’t want to get in that position again.

“The business we did in this window was never going to be dependent on whether we sell a key player.

“We had a budget worked out ahead of the window and we knew if we wanted to strengthen in certain areas that we would.

“We have signed seven players in this window and the ownership of this club has never said no to the manager when he has wanted to sign a player.

"Now what’s good from a financial point of view for the club from the player sale is that we now have some greater certainty about the kinds of resource that we have going forward and planning for next year."
