Anderson - Jimmy Hill Is A Huge Role Model

Coventry City MD Chris Anderson has said that Jimmy Hill is a huge role model.

Anderson who spoke at the Jimmy Hill Celebration at Coventry Cathedral told the Coventry Telegraph's Simon Gilbert: “I wrote about him in my book. He’s a huge role model, he wasn’t afraid of the future, but it was clear he was someone who cared deeply about traditions.

“He’s a bit of a contradiction. He cared about tradition, the game is a game of tradition, but at the same time he was willing to just throw it all out and try something completely different.

“That can go terribly awry but when it goes well, it goes spectacularly well.

“We’re a football club in the third division, we don’t have a tonne of resources, the only thing we can do is try something different and try something new - and we will, of course.

“He’s a great example to follow. You can read what he did for the football club in a couple of different ways.

“He achieved great things on the field, successive promotions from the third division to the first division. That’s obviously something we’re interested in as a football club, we’re in the third division and we’d like to move up.

“He gave the club an identity it didn’t have before, he wasn’t afraid to change things, he wasn’t afraid to try something new.

“It wasn’t always popular, we remember him fondly, but a number of the things he suggested weren’t taken up at the time or weren’t embraced at the time.

“He wasn’t afraid to say let’s try something different, let’s see how it works and let’s see if it does something positive for the fans, the club and the community. That is a great legacy.”
