A New Deal For Best

Coventry City are hoping to sort out a new deal for Leon Best.

The striker had an up and down season for City. After a good pre-season, he was injured in the final game at Kilmarnock and missed the first five matches of the season.

He then had his confidence shot to pieces in the home defeat to Crystal Palace by certain people there on the day.

Despite efforts by the rest of the City support especially at away games to help boost his confidence, Best, who had stopped clapping the City fans, risking the support of those who had been backing him all the way through, struggled to find the net.

Come the new year, Best scored against Kidderminster in the FA Cup Third Round. At Queens Park Rangers, where he ran over to the City support and clapped them before the game, Best was in tremendous form and caused such a problem that the West Londoners had to resort to kicking him in the face to stop him.

One kick in the 65th minute, fractured his cheekbone, causing him to miss four games. He returned as a late substitute for the home February win against Champions Wolves, wearing a protective face mask.

The City support took to this mask and Zorro caused problems for Blackburn Rovers and then scored for City at Burnley. A solid game against also promoted Birmingham City was followed by scoring the winning goal in an FA Cup Fifth Round replay which knocked Premier League Blackburn Rovers out and set up a Sixth Round tie with Chelsea.

He was involved in the first goal which helped send Norwich City into League One.

A groin injury saw him forced off at the break in the home game with Reading but he was back to play in the final game of the season at Watford and put in a good enough performance to impress the watching scouts who have called him up for the Republic Of Ireland's friendly against Nigeria on Friday night.
