A Good First Day - Mowbray

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray has said that the first day back training for the City players was a good day.

Mowbray told the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner: “The first day back was very good, albeit a bit hot so we had to adjust the training a little bit.

“Footballers come back pretty fit these days and while it’s hard work in the pre-season, everything was done with the ball. That’s the way I do pre-season and try to get them doing what I want them doing for the next ten months really.

“It’s not a case of going off on long runs any more and I think it makes it more enjoyable for the players. I was telling the story today about going to Aberystwyth and running seven miles along a beach to a bunch of sand dunes where we had to do a circuit course up and down the dunes.

"It seems ridiculous now that we did that, and yet that’s what we used to do when I was a young footballer.

“The modern day pre-season is still hard but I have always put pre-season into the context of we only finished eight or nine weeks ago so I just want them out there with the ball and getting them to work, and then the games take care of themselves when they come along.”
