A Game Of Two Halves - Hopkins

Coventry Sphinx Manager Luke Hopkins felt his side’s 4-1 win against Continental Star on Saturday was a game of two halves.

Sphinx trailled to a 21st minute Arron Garvey goal but came back with goals from Rickie Cutting, Ashley Jackson, Luke Downes and Ashley Wilks.

Hopkins’ whose side travel to Walsall Wood tomorrow said to the Sphinx website: “First half, we struggled to put the ball in the back of the net and it seemed it could be one of those weeks again.

“We hit the bar twice and the post and forced their keeper into making a few saves and even missed an open goal, but it was hard to steer a missile ball.

“We went in 1-0 down and the heads seemed to have dropped even though we were the better team.

“The game was a little heated with some tackles being put in but think this was a result of the conditions a little and frustrated players. To be honest, Continental Star like to play football, they get it down and move it about and look to break on you when they can.

“The second half was completely different. We started from the first whistle and Rickie Cutting got that bit of luck we needed with Luke Williams switched on rolling Rickie’s feet to turn and finish while Star were still organising the defence.

“We made three changes early in the second half, which two of them adding the next two goals in Ashley Jackson a header from a corner and Luke Downes getting his first goal since joining us with some good football alongside Rickie Cutting, then Ash Wilks added the fourth all in quick succession to kill the game and get the much needed three points as we move onto Tuesday and the start of a lot of midweek games.

“Our second half performance was brilliant. It was just a shame that it took 45 minutes to get going, but with some new young lads in the team we are slowly learning it’s about the end result and not the Barcelona style football we want to play.”
