Sky Blues On The Road - Watford

Last updated : 04 March 2005 By Covsupport

Another massive game for the Sky Blues in their bid to move away from just above the drop zone is the trip to Vicarage Road, Watford on Saturday.

The main talk this week has centred around goal keepers following Ian Bennett’s dismissal against Stoke City last week. The club appealed against the decision which was not surprisingly rejected by the Football League who did allow them to recall Scott Shearer who was in the first month of a loan at Rushden & Diamonds.

Shearer will be backed up by Jonny Tuffey who has been drafted in from the reserves. The Northern Ireland U19 international keeper has been given the squad number 34.

Stephen Hughes who performed miracles in the City goal against Stoke has said he would play in goal again if required but will continue in his midfield role.

Robert Page who joined City on a free from Cardiff is struggling to be fit and should not the Welsh international captain be fit in time for the team-sheet to be handed into referee Mr Thorpe of Suffolk, then Steve Staunton will keep his place at centre half alongside Adie Williams.

There is competition for places in midfield with Andy Morrell, Eddy Johnson, Graham Barrett and Neil Wood all vying for the one place in the centre of the park with Gary McSheffrey, Michael Doyle and Stephen Hughes.

Adams will keep faith with Ian Benjamin and Stern John was has been the target of bids from Sheffield United and interest from Stoke City and Leeds United.

Watford Boss Ray Lewington is taking nothing for granted with the visit of the Sky Blues despite the stats saying that The Hornets have won five and drawn two out of the last nine games at home to City. He is expected to name an unchanged side with Brynjar Gunnarsson still short of fitness, Heidar Helguson rated as only 50/50 and Sean Dyche “nowhere near ready”.

The game last season saw a 1-1 draw in a re-arranged game following the death of loanee from Manchester United Jimmy Davis. Steve Staunton netted late on for the Sky Blues.

Tickets are available priced at £17 for adults and £12 for concessions in advance. This rises by three quid if tickets are bought on the day.

Vicarage Road is relatively easy to get to; By Car: Exit the M1 at Junction 5 and follow the A4008, signed 'Town Centre'. Take the slip road by-passing a roundabout (again, signed 'Town Centre') and continue on the A4008. After passing under a railway arch take the second exit (straight on) at the next roundabout to approach traffic lights at the junction with the ring-road.

Continue on the ring-road, getting in the left-hand lane to follow signs for West Watford (A4145) and Watford General Hospital . At a t-junction, turn left and immediately get in the right-hand lane to follow the road round into Fearnley Street (again, signed for West Watford and the hospital).

Get in the left-hand lane, pass through traffic lights as your bear left and the ground is 200 yards up on your left, opposite the Red Lion pub.

By Train get off at Watford Junction and it’s a fifteen minute walk. Those coming from London can also use the tube and get off at Watford High Street, although this takes about an hour from the capital and a train is quicker.

With Jonny Tuffey on first team duty, Cameron Belford will deputise for the City U18’s who are away to Tottenham Hotspur (11.30am).

Coventry City Ladies are hoping for a big turn-out of supporters as they travel to face local rivals Aston Villa at Sutton Coldfield Town on Sunday. City boss Mark Phillips formerly managed Villa and a number of his players have played for the Birmingham based club over the years. Kick off at Coles Lane is at 2pm.
