Wout Poels Takes Volta A Catalunya Stage Five Win

Team Sky's Wout Poels rode to victory on the fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya.

Nairo Quintana of Movistar was the new leader for the fifth stage which was 187.2kms long and from Rialp to Valls.

it was a stage which took place without Geraint Thomas who was ill and was one that saw Luis Mas (Caja Rural) try and get away after 33kms.

After 68kms, there was the sprint at Ager and Dan Martin of Etixx Quick Step beat Alberto Contador to the points. However, they were back in the pack when Thomas De Gendt of Lotto Soudale took the Port d'Àger climb.

With 82kms gone, a break including Formolo (Cannondale) Cataldo (Astana), Verona (Etixx), De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Dupont (AG2R), Losada (Katusha), Poels (Sky) and Wanty Group's Boris Dron formed.

Verona took the sprint at El Tarrós after 122kms as this group took a lead that was down to 4.15 seventeen kilometres later.

The group stayed clear and with fourteen kilometres left, Poels went away and was first over the final climb.

Poels had a lead of 14 seconds with five kilometres left and then negotiated a number of roundabouts in Valis, chased by four riders.

Poels went away and won the stage in a time of 3.59.01 with Dario Cataldo of Astana in second place, followed by Bille, Siutsou, Verona, 6 Gerrans, Tcatecich and Gasparotto.

Nairo Quintana keeps his race lead.
