Warwickshire Cricket League Results

Saturday marked the half way point of the season and the leagues are beginning to take shape. It was a day of little change at the top of the premier, with the significant, match being the 2nd vs 3rd clash, Highway hosting Bablake OB. Highway batted first in a high scoring affair and B Sandhu 59 scored will in the top order before J Marsh with 127 Not Out, seemed to have taken the game away from the visitors with a total of 275 for 6 before tea. However Highway are made of stern stuff and although they did not reach the win target they got to 247 for 7, with new acquisition Tony Bristow 124. This meant a draw and although Highway 17 points and Bablake 10 received good return from their days efforts it left the door wide open for Streetly hosting Kenilworth to take advantage. Kenilworths 247 for 8 before tea must have seemed at least competitive with Edmunds and Lloyd both getting past 50. After tea however after losing their first wicket early on, an unbeaten stand of over 200 between Lloyd (126no) and Moore (98no) saw the top side home. The day got better for Streetly when several of the chasing pack faltered. Ansley hauled themselves off the bottom with a winning draw against Fillongley, and Solihull Blossemfield closed the gap on the rivals on the day Olton and West Warwicks and with the other teams taking points off each other Streetly now lead the division by 20 points.

Division 1 saw the highest score in the WCL this year as Pakshaheen failed by 1 run to top 400, 399 for 9 with 2 centurions, Q Zaman (100), Faisal Riaz (111), in their draw against Offchurch. Offchurch themselves made 274 for 8 hanging on for the draw. The game of the day however in this division was the clash of first vs third, Southam and Old Eds. In a repeat of the premier division report OId eds 227 for 9 before tea must have looked at least competitive but two batsmen again got going for Southam Mahoney 100 Not Out, Hooker 55 Not Out in a century 3rd wicket stand to win the match. Then Southam received a bonus from Stockton. Led by Owen Edwards they made 275 for 8 against second side, Walsall WMF and this proved too much to chase down. The 7 points left Southam 33 points clear tonight.

Division 2 saw the game of the day when Marston Green visit Standard. Top vs Second and a win would have had the Solihull club well clear as they led the division by a full 33 points at the start of the day. Standard batted first in this one and despite losing Minesh Patel cheaply early on, the bat was always in charge of the ball. Lee Bennet was joined by Andy Jones and in a third wicket partnership of over 150 they proceeded to take the match away from Marston Green. Jones fell on 90 but Bennet went on to make his century before being bowled by St.Claire Thornhill shortly after for 102. Contributions down the order from Alcock, Stride and Jones kept up the pace as the innings closed at 318 for 8. After tea, Standard rounded off a resounding victory. Minesh Patel had failed with the bat but was devastating with the ball, his 12 overs going for 4 for 37 as ripped into the Martson Green middle order. Dean Tune batting at 9 provided the only real resistance with 33 before becoming Patel’s fourth victim as Marston Green crashed to 134 all out and only 4 points. Rugby joined standard on 177 points as M Ewer 5 For 33 and Hinks 4 For 6 ensure North Warks fell 51 runs short of their target of 233. In a foot note to play in this division Danny Cullen for Martson Green 2nds, might get a call up to the forsts next week ?. Cullen, opened the batting and scored 105 in 27 scoring shots, possibly a league record, 19 x 4s and 4 x 6s. In a total of 202 for 2. Needless to say this was enough to defeat Pak Shaheen seconds.
