Warwickshire County Cricket Club got their season opener off to a good start with an innings and three run victory at Durham University.

Warwicks had given Will Porterfield the honour of being the 500th player to represent the County in first class matches since 1884 and also gave debuts to Berkswell's Tom Milnes and Maurice Holmes.

On the opening day, the home side batted first. Keith Barker recorded a first-class career best figure of 5-31 as a brace for Piolet, and wickets for Holmes and Maddy saw the students all out for 135 in 54 overs.

Ian Westwood went on the attack and hit a quickfire 102 from 121 balls including 11 fours and two sixes, after Chopra had made 25 and Porterfield was out for a duck. Jim Troughton was out for 51 as Warwicks closed on 217-4.

Day two saw 95 from Tim Ambrose, 31 from Barker and 23 from Milnes as Warwicks were all out for 387.  Luc Durandt offered some resistance for Durham making 105 not out before the close.

Rain hampered the early session but Warwicks on the third day managed to get the job down and skittled Durham University all out for 249 with Milnes recording figures of 4-15 as Warwicks won by an innings and three runs.

On Thursday, Warwicks start their County Championship campaign with a game against Somerset at Taunton. Ball by ball commentary can be heard on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire (mainly on-line via their website)
