Warwickshire County Cricket Club went down to a one run defeat in their opening CB40 game of the season.

Warwicks, who gave a debut to Peter McKay, won the toss at Edgbaston and decided to put Kent into bat. They struck with only fourteen runs on the board, when Billings who had made thirteen of those runs was caught by Jon Trott to give Chris Woakes a wicket.

Brendan Nash and Robert Key pushed the score on to 99 before Key was caught by Darren Maddy for 44 off the bowling of Jeetan Patal.

Sixteen runs later and Darren Maddy had a wicket when Patal caught Stephens and he took another wicket when he had Stacey Northeast caught and bowled.

Patal claimed his second wicket when Jones was caught to leave Kent on 141-5.

Nash continued to make runs going to an unbeaten 98 but Ball went for 28 and Coles for 20 to see Kent end on 239-8.

That meant Warwicks needed a run a ball to win and they had moved to 54 in the ninth over when Ian Bell was caught by Billings off the bowling of Coles for 35.

Jon Trott came in but only added three runs before he was caught behind by Jones to give Davies a wicket.

Varun Chopra and Will Porterfield came together with the score on 63 and pushed the total to 148 when Chopra, who had hit one six in an innings of 65, was caught by Coles in the 27th over.

Darren Maddy made only two runs before he was caught and bowled by Riley, leaving Warwicks 87 runs to win in eleven overs.

Laurie Evans only added eight before he was out giving Billings at  deep mid-wicket a catch.

The collapse continued with Porterfield going lbw to Riley after making 47 and Stefan Piolet run out after facing five balls without scoring.

Needing runs, Chris Woakes was then run out for eight, leaving Warwicks on 185-8 in the 35th over.

Jeetan Patal hit two sixes to see Warwicks needing 42 from the final four overs and continued to make runs, completing his fifty to see Warwicks now needing five runs from the final six balls.

Wright ran a single, followed by a leg by and another single. Ball five was a dot ball and the final ball saw Patal run out and Warwicks going down to one run defeat
