Warwickshire County Cricket Club had Lancashire on the ropes early on but let them back into the match on the opening day of the County Championship game at Old Trafford.

Warwicks won the toss and elected to field and it looked a good decision as three balls in, Smith was caught by Ian Bell off the bowling of Chris Woakes.

Horton came in but only made two runs from sixteen balls before Woakes had his second victim when Jon Trott took the catch. 8-2 became 9-3 when Moore was caught by Bell to give Woakes his third wicket

Five more runs were added before Bell had his third catch of the morning, this time it was Chilton who was the man out to give Neil Carter a wicket.

South African Ashwell Prince and Steve Croft came to the wicket and put together a partnership of 133 before the latter was caught by Chopra from the bowling of Naqaash Tahir for 64.

Prince had made 82 before he was the sixth player out, giving Neil Carter his second wicket of the day but Lancashire, who did not have former Coventry City goalkeeper Gary Montgomery in their side, who were 194-6 at tea.

In the final session of the day, Lancs took their score up to 227 before Sutton was caught by Troughton for 33 off the bowling of Jon Trott, who two overs later, bowled Anderson.

Imran Tahir took the wicket of Kerrigan and Carter recorded figures of 3-64 when he had Mahmood caught to see Lancashire all out for 253.

Warwicks faced eight overs at the end of the day and had Chopra bowled by Anderson for a single. They closed on 13-1.
