Valverde Wins Giro Stage 16

Alejandro Valverde of Movistar took the win on stage sixteen of the Giro D'Italia.

Stage sixteen after the final rest day, may have been a short stage at 132kms from Bressanone to Andalo but there was three climbs to over-come for the 163 riders who started.

Mirco Maestri (Bardiani-CSF), Daniel Oss and Joey Rosskopf (BMC), Simon Clarke (Cannondale), Matteo Trentin (Etixx-QuickStep), Olivier Le Gac (FDJ), Pim Ligthart (Lotto Soudal), Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff) and Marco Coledan (Trek-Segafredo) to into an early break with Coledan taking the intermediate sprint but they were never allowed to get too far and were soon brought back.

Maglia Rosa wearing Stephen Kruijswijk was one of the riders who tried to attack on the Passo della Mendola climb but it was David Lopez of Team Sky who took the maximum KOM points, followed by Firsanov.

On a day where speeds were up,  Lopez, Firsanov, Valverde, Nibali, Jungels, Tangert, Ulissi, Zakarin, Dombrowski and the race leader were in a group which was 1.07 ahead of the peloton with fifty kilometres to go.

Dombrowski was called back by his team, leaving Kruijswijk, Zakarin and Valverde some thirty five seconds clear with 11.8kms left

Kruijswijk took the points on the next climb before it came down to a sprint with Alejandro Valverde winning in 2.58.54 ahead of Kruijswijk and Zakarin.

Kruijswijk leads the race by three minutes from Esteban Chaves.
