Trentin Wins Giro Stage 18

Matteo Trentin took the win on Stage 18 of the 99th Giro D'Italia.

Stage 18 was a long 244km stage from Muggiò to Pinerolo and for much of it was mainly flat although there were a few nasty bumps along the way.

A big group of Axel Domont (AG2R-La Mondiale), Davide Malacarne (Astana), Stefan Kung, Daniel Oss (BMC), Moreno Moser, Ramunas Navadauskas (Cannondale), Gianluca Brambilla, Matteo Trentin (Etixx-QuickStep), Olivier le Gac (FDJ), Andrey Solomennikov (Gazprom-Rusvelo), Roger Kluge (IAM Cycling), Sacha Modolo, Matej Mohoric (Lampre-Merida), Pim Ligthart (Lotto-Soudal), Genki Yammamoto, Gianfranco Zilioli (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Nikias Arndt, Alberto Timmer (Giant-Alpecin), Christian Knees (Team Sky), Pavel Brutt, Jay McCarthy, Ivan Rovny (Tinkoff) and Julen Amezqueta Moreno (Wilier Triestina-Southeast) formed the first break of the day and after an hour, they were 9.44 ahead.

Through Borgo Vercelli with a lead of 8.50 and at the halfway stage, 10.40 ahead with Sacha Modolo taking the intermediate sprint as the gap went back out to over eleven minutes.

Roger Kluge broke away with 41kms left before Pavel Brutt took over before they started on the San Maurtizo climb. 

Brutt was brought back and Matteo Trentin led the riders over the climb.

Moser and Brambrilla then went away and were still clear with three hundred metres but up came Matteo Trentin of Etixx Quick Step to take the win.
