Tony Martin New Mens World Time Trial Champion

Tony Martin is the new UCI Mens World Time Trial Champion.

The 2016 course was 40kms long and from the Lusail Sports Park to The Pearl in Doha, Qatar.

Ireland's Ryan Mullen set the early time to beat finishing in 46.04.74 before Steve Cummings and Alex Dowsett went down the ramp for Great Britain.

Mullen was delighted with his time and tweeted: "Nice little surprise to make it on to the hot seat. Gave it everything. May or may not have passed out at one point."

Dowsett was tenth fastest through the first checkpoint clocking a time of 16:43.81 as the 2015 winner Vasil Kiryienka of Belarus went down the ramp.

With 34 out of 66 riders finished, Mullen was still in the hot seat and he watched on as Steve Cummings finished in 47.31.52 to go provisionally tenth.

Tony Martin went through the first time check in 16.05 the quickest with Kiryienka second quickest.

Dowsett went through the second checkpoint eighth fastest and finished in 46.54.07 to finish provisionally fifth whilst Kiryienka was riding at speeds over 62kmh.

Maciej Bodnar rode superbly and the Pole set the new time of 45.59.76, knocking Mullen into the silver medal position.

Jonanthan Castroveijo took the lead  thenTony Martin came onto the Pearl, having been quicker than Mullen at all three checkpoints. The German just kept his head down and his body as aero dynamic as possible and finished in 44.42.99 to take the lead. 

Australian Rohan Dennis was amongst the favourites but finished in 46.10.11 with Tom Fumoulin finishing in 46.44.59 and last man Vasil Kiryienka finishing forty five seconds down on the time of a delighted Tony Martin, to take the silver medal.

Martin said about his fourth World Championship Time Trial win: "It's is amazing I still cannot believe it. It's incredible and makes everything that has happened this year worth it.

The course was made for me. I made a good preparation and had a good week with the team. I had no pressure and made my race perfect from the start. "
