Katusha's Alexander Kristoff  has won the opening stage of the Arctic Race Of Norway.

The most northernly cycle race in the world run by ASO, opened with a 180.5km stage from Fauske to Rognan and included three sprints and three climbs.

Hagen, Maxine Cam, Van Asbroeck, Gregory Rast, Schillinger, Kenny de Ketele and Max Kørner were first to get away and they soon had a lead of 4.50.

That was at seven minutes when they went through the city of Bodø, which will stage the race finish on Sunday, where Tom Van Asbroeck took the three points in the sprint.

With 65kms, the gap stood at 5.33 to the peloton which included eleven World Tour teams including Team Sky as they took on the Kvikstadheia climb in a competition where the winner get 500lbs of salmon every day.

Tom Van Asbroeck took the three points on offer to add to the points he earned for being first on the first climb, ahead of Hagen and Cam as their lead continued to lessen.

Rast of Trek Segafredo took the next sprint at Enge with 45.8kms left and plenty watching the race on the roadside.

Schillinger of Bora Argon 18 took the third sprint at Brakke as Irishman Matt Brammier of Dimension Data led the peloton who were now 2.57 behind.

Onto the final climb and after Tinkoff's Jay McCarthy abandoned, De Ketele was dropped as the break split with Rast and Schillinger going clear.

With 22kms to go, Andrea Schillinger dropped Rast and took the Ljøsenhammeren climb.

Rast was caught as the gap to Schillinger dropped to 38 seconds with 13kms left.

Schillinger was caught and the sprint teams started to push forwards.

Under the flam rouge and a tight left hand turn and it was Giant Alpecin on the front. There was a crash but it was Alexander Kristoff who won in 4.10.02 just ahead of John Degenkolb and Danny Van Poppel of Team Sky.

"It was really fast and a really good sprint," said Kristoll.

"I am happy to have got past Degenkolb who had gear problems. I am managed to get over the climb and my goal was to get a stage win which I have so I will see how I get on."
