Warwickshire County Cricket Club had a good day on the opening day of their home County Championship game with Somerset at Edgbaston.

With sunshine abounding, Somerset batted first and had put on 64 when Arul Suppiah was bowled by Andrew Miller.

Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton moved the score on to 125 before the latter was caught by Rikki Clarke to give a wicket for Chris Metters who had been brought into the team along with Ian Westwood after both had performed well with Warwicks second eleven.

Nine runs later and Boyd Rankin struck twice in the space of four balls to remove firstly Hildreth and then Kieswetter.

Former England opener Trescothwick had made 69 but he became the fifth Somerset batsman to lose his wicket when he was caught behind by Ambrose to give Rankin another wicket.

Lewis Gregory and Peter Trego upped the run rate before Gregory was bowled by Clarke for 48.

This started a mini collapse for the visitors with Kartik, Hussain and Kirby all going in the space of fourteen runs and giving Rankin a fourth wicket and figures of 4-41.

Trego hit one six and five fours in a valuable knock of 56 but when he was caught by Ambrose off the bowling of Woakes, Somerset had been skittled out for 262.

In reply, Warwicks were 86-0 with Ian Westwood on 48 and Varun Chopra on 33.

The second test between England and Sri Lanka ended in a draw. Former Warwicks batsman Kumar Sangakkara hit 119 as Sri Lanka ended the day on 334-5.
