Geraint Thomas Wins Volta Ao Algarve

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas has won the Volta ao Algarve.

Tony Martin was the leader for this final 169km stage from Almodôvar to  Alto do Malhão which saw nine riders in Pellaud,Vorobyev,Groenewegen, Popovych, Bárta,Mas,Kolobnev, Cardoso and Jiménez take an early lead.

They were 4.40 ahead after 61.5kms but only 2.45 with 108kms gone and Tinkoff, Movistar and Etixx Quick Step controlling the peloton.

Over the Malhão for the first time and Alexander Kolobnev (Gazprom Rusvelo) took the main points ahead of Mas and Castroviejo.

The race leader was starting to lose time and as the peloton split, he was in a second group which was forty seconds down on the first.

The escapers were brought back after 1.39kms but Tony Martin was now 1.37 behind the peloton.

Alexandr Kolobnev made sure he took the KOM jersey when he nipped out to take the points on the 3rd category climb at Vermelhos.

The pack stayed together until there was five kilometres left and then Alberto Contador of Tinkoff made his move.

Contador, who is set to retire at the end of this season, showed that there is plenty of life in the old dog and attacked.

The Spaniard was not to be caught and he won the race in 4.24.47 with Fabio Aru of Astana second, twenty seconds down, just ahead of Thibaut Pinot of FDJ and Manuel Amaro of La Alminios-Antarte.

Next was Geraint Thomas of Team Sky who had ridden brilliantly to get up to fifth place. Thomas finished twenty eight seconds behind Contador and this gave the Welshman the overall victory.
