Boyd Rankin took five wickets as Warwickshire bowled out Lancashire for 227 on the opening day of their County Championship game at Edgbaston.

Warwickshire had England internationals Jon Trott and Ian Bell back in the side and it was Chris Woakes who struck first when Ambrose caught Horton for seven with ten runs on the board.

Rikki Clarke took three wickets with his first being Brown before Chilton became Woakes' second victim to leave the visitors on 99-3 with Clarke taking the first of three catches.

Croft then went followed by Stephen Moore who had made 67. Procter and Cross put on ninety for the sixth wicket to see Lancs on 219-6.

Cross went in the next over and Boyd Rankin came in and mopped up the tail to give himself figures of 5-57 and Lancashire all out for 227 in 78 overs.

When Warwicks batted, Will Porterfield was out for two but Varun Chopra and Ian Bell steered Warwicks to 39-1, some 188 runs behind.
