Drucker Wins La Vuelta Stage Sixteen

Jempy Drucker of BMC took the win on stage sixteen of the Vuelta a España.

On a day for the sprinters rather than the GC men led by Movistar's Nairo Quintana, Silvan Dillier (BMC), Sven Erik Bystrom (Katusha), Luis Angel Mate (Cofidis) and Julien Morice (Direct Energie) broke straight away on this 156.4km stage from Alcaniz to Peniscola.

Davide Villella (Cannondale) and Mario Costa (Lampre - Merida) joined them and they were three minutes ahead of the Astana led peloton with 142km going.

They were still three minutes ahead sixty kilometres later and stayed clear until there was twelve kilometres to go.

Benatti of Tinkoff got on the front but onto the final 1400m long finishing straight but he was caught and Jempy Drucker of BMC took on Gianni Meersman and Drucker won the stage in 3.21.18 ahead of Selig, Nikias Arndt of Giant-Alpecin, Gianni Meersman and Lorenzo Manzin of FDJ.

"I suffered a lot but I was confident today and took my chance," said Drucker. "It's cool to have a victory in a grand tour and good for my name.

"It was a bit hectic but I set my sprint and it was perfect.  The main goal was to win a stage so I have done that and have no stress."
