Etixx Quick Step's David De La Cruz has won the ninth stage of the Vuelta a Espana and takes over the lead of the race.

A 164.5km stage from Cistierna to Alto del Naranco had Nairo Quintana in the leader's jersey and was another stage for the climbers.

Simon Clarke. (Cannondale-Drapac), Dylan Teuns (BMC), Alexandre Geniez (FDJ), Jan Bakelants (AG2R La Mondiale), De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), David de la Cruz (Etixx-QuickStep), Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana), Moreno Moser (Cannondale-Drapac), Mathias Frank (IAM Cycling), Dries Devenyns (IAM Cycling), Bartosz Huzarski (Bora Argon 18), Pello Bilbao (Caja Rural) were in the first break and after fifty kilometres, they were almost five minutes ahead.

On a foggy day, Sergey Lagutin of Katusha took the ten points on the Alto de San Isidro category two climb and after Yoann Bagot of Cofidis became the third rider of the day to abandon, the break was 4.53 ahead  with 58kms left.

Thomas de Gendt took the intermediate sprint at Langreo and the next KOM climb but then dropped out of the break along with Simon Clarke.

With fourteen kilometres left, the break was still 4.30 clear of the peloton so David De La Cruz and Dries Deveyns of IAM Cycling got away in a bid to take victory.

They were 51 seconds clear with 2.7kms left on the final climb up to the Alto del Naranco.

De La Cruz of Etixx Quick Step went just before the flam rouge and won in 3.47.57 with Dries Deveyns in second ahead of Moser, Luis Leon Sanchez and Frank.

De La Cruz now leads the race.
