Danny van Poppel of Team Sky took the second stage of the Tour De Yorkshire.

On a stage from Otley to Doncaster, four British riders Richard Handley from ONE Pro Cycling, Edmund Bradbury and Josh Edmondson from NFTO, and Gruff Lewis from Madison-Genesis and Michael Morkov from Katusha and Stijn Steels from Topsport Vlaanderen were in the break.

They were around ninety seconds clear when they were joined by Cofidis' Nicholas Edet.

On the final climb at Conisbrough Castle, the break split and with ten kilometres to go and the World Tour teams chomping at the bit, it was all over.

Danny van Poppel of Team Sky and race leader Dylan Groenewegen made their move with two hundred metres to go and and it was the Team Sky rider who won in 3.04.20 with Groenwegen, who leads the race going into the final stage, in second with Nikias Arndt of Giant Alpecin again third.

Chris Opie was the first British rider home in fourth place.

"The team did a great job, that's the first thing to say," said Van Poppel to the Team Sky press office. "We were really motivated. The last two kilometres it was raining and really hectic. The team did the best they could to really take care of me and then in the last few hundred metres Dylan came really close, but I just knew that I'd won. It was a hectic few minutes.

"I've had a knee injury and this is maybe my ninth or 10th race (this year). I really needed this victory. There have been some hard times but now I think I'm back! It's my first victory for Team Sky and it's really cool to ride for this team
