Chris Froome is the new leader of the Critérium du Dauphiné after a victory on stage five.

This was a 140km from La Ravoire to Vaujany with a summit finish and saw a group of 25 riders first to break away.

Only Andriy Grivko (Astana) remained off the front from the initial break and he was later joined by Cyril Gautier (AG2R-La Mondiale), Dayer Quintana (Movistar), Enrico Gasparotto (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Bartosz Huzarski (Bora Argon 18).

Race leader Alberto Contador's TInkoff team never let those in the break get more than three minutes clear and going into the final six kilometre climb only Gasparotto was on the front.

He was brought back with 4kms left and Dan Martin put in a new attack which took Richie Porte, Contador and Team Sky's Sergio Henao to bring him back. Up came Chris Froome with 2.5kms to go.

Richie Porte followed but he could not catch Froome who won in 3.32.20 to put him in the lead of the race.

Porte was two seconds behind Froome and followed by British rider Adam Yates, Dan Martin and Alberto Contador.

"It's an amazing feeling. It's always good to win a race before the Tour de France. The team rode very well day to take me to the final climb in the best position. They set it up perfectly for me,” Froome said after the race. “I didn't expect to gain time on Alberto Contador on such a short climb.”
