Mark Cavendish has missed out on automatic qualification for the Rio Olympics after finishing in sixth place in the Omnium.

The Dimension Data sprinter needed a podium place in the World Track Championships in London but could only finish in sixth place after finishing 12th in the Kilometre Time Trial, 4th in the Flying Lap and down the list of finishers in the points race.

Fernando Gaviria of Colombia won the Gold with 161 points, some thirty more than Cavendish who told Sky Sports News: "Tactically, I did not do too much wrong in the whole Omnium.

"The Kilo I did a very good ride but the others weren't better. i was practising and practising for the pursuit but it got too hard and blew my lights out.

"Brad helped me with the pursuit but what happens now we will see."
