Cancellera The Olympic Mens Time Trial Champion

Fabian Cancellera is the Olympic Men's Time Trial champion with Britain's Chris Froome taking a bronze medal.

A cloudy day with some rain in Pontal for this 54.6km time trial which had attracted 37 entrants with Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas included due to a number of withdrawals.

Dan Craven of Namibia was first down the ramp on this two lap of the Grumari circuit which featured in Saturday's road race at 10am local time and was in the first of two groups with the likes of Tony Martin, Rohan Dennis and Froome in the second group

He went through the first check point in 18.09 whilst Brent Bookwalter went down on the first corner of the course.

Kochetkov was quickest at the first check point after ten kilometres with a time of 16:39 before his time was beaten by George Priedler of Austria and Belgian's Tim Wellens who went through in 15:45.56.

Leopold Konig (Czech Republic) set the fastest time at the third check before Edvald Boasson-Hagen was the first rider of the second tranche of riders to go down the ramp at 11.15am.

Three minutes later and with the roads drying out, Geraint Thomas went down the ramp.

Iran's Ghader Mizbani Iranagh became the first man to finish the course when he came home in 1.21.39.

The time to beat had been set with Chris Juul Jensen beating it and then George Priedler finishing 40+ seconds quicker in 1.16.02 and Germany's Simon Geschke in 1.15.49.

Fabian Cancellera (Switzerland) went down the ramp and at 11.40am, Chris Froome was the last man to set off.

Leopold Konig became the new fastest man finishing in 1.15.23 as Thomas passed Hugo Houle who started ninety seconds before him.

Rohan Dennis was quickest at the first and third checkpoints until Cancellera picked things up and was fastest at the third checkpoint.

Dennis then suffered a mechanical and his chances of a medal was over whilst Froome was 32 seconds down at the third checkpoint and seven seconds off a medal.

Geraint Thomas finished in 1.14.52.35 to take over the lead until Jonathan Castroviejo finished in 1.13.21.

Fabian Cancellera was flying down the roads and he came home in 1.12.15.42 with a superb effort to go into the leader's hot seat.

Tom Dumoulin came home 47 seconds slower thn Cancellera to go second as Froome made his way home to finish in 1.13.17 and take the bronze medal.
