Lotto Soudal's Andre Greipel won the fifth stage of the 99th Giro D'Italia.

A 233km stage from Praia a Mare to Benevento saw Daniel Oss (BMC), Alexander Foliforov (Gazprom), Amets Txurruka (Orica-GreenEdge) and Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff) in the break which formed after 40kms.

They were 6.30 ahead on a stage where Omar Fraile (Dimension Data) and Jakob Mareczko (Wilier-Southeast) were forced to quit the race.

Daniel Oss took one corner too wide and hit a metal fence pole but thankfully was ok and able to work his way back to those in the break.

Jack Bobridge (Trek-Segafredo) and Albert Timmer (Giant-Alpecin) also crashed before the break was eventually caught with six kilometres to go.

Rein Taaramae (Katusha) crashed with 1.5kms to go but Andre Greipel got onto the cobbles and won in a time of 5.40.35 ahead of Arnaud Demare (FDJ) and Bob Jungels (Etixx-QuickStep),

Race leader Tom Dumoulin finished safely to retain his pink jersey.
