Movistar's Alex Dowsett has won the British Men's Time Trial Champion's title for a record fifth time after taking the victory at the British National Championships in Stockton On Tees.

On a 7.2 mile (11.6km) course which was to be completed four times and one which saw the riders starting and finishing on the High Street in Stockton town centre and riding up the A11135, A1130 and on to Queen Elizabeth Way, over the River Tees before turning back and heading towards Stockton town centre to complete the lap.

There were a number of withdrawals including George Atkins, Mark Christian, Owain Doull, Steven Burke, Dan McLay, and last year's silver medallist Ed Bradbury, but Chris Smart was the first rider to take to the start line with champion and favourite Alex Dowsett of Movistar the last to go.

University of Bath Cycling Club's Liam Bromiley set the early time to beat, recording a time of 1:00:35.662.

Richard Handley beat that with a time of 59:09.393 as did his One Pro Cycling team mate Peter Williams who finished in 58:15.362 before Pedal Heaven's James Gullen went top with a time of 56:54.832.

Dowsett kept up a good pace throughout the four laps and was able to finish a minute and sixteen seconds quicker than Gullen in 55:38.523 to retain his title.
