Warwickshire County Cricket Club had a better day on the opening day of their County Championship game against Durham at the Riverside.

Having been beaten in Twenty/20 action at Nottinghamshire yesterday, Warwicks journeyed up the M1 to face Durham who batted first.

With the last ball of the third over, Neil Carter was the first Warwicks player to take a wicket when he had Di Venuto caught behind by Tim Ambrose.

Carter followed that up with the score on 19, when Stoneman was caught by Rikki Clarke who got in on the act when he had Muchall who had made 27 caught.

Darren Maddy and Boyd Rankine chipped in with wickets against a side that passed the 100 mark.

Blackwell and Mustard put on 91 for the sixth wicket before Mustard was out for 35. Blackwell went to make 86 when he was bowled by Clarke, Durham were on 221-7.

It was not a case of mopping up the tail and that was done to see Durham all out for 288.

Warwicks closed on 7-0.
