Coventry born Ian Bell hit 57 but England went down to a crushing innings and 12 run defeat against South Africa in the first test at The Oval.

Bell resumed from his over-night total of fourteen and went on to hit 57 from 220 balls with six fours before he was caught by Jack Khallis off the bowling of former Warwicks bowler Dale Steyn, who finished with figures of 5-56.
