Winwood Set For Repeat Success

Last updated : 11 October 2014 By Joe McLoughlin

Coventry Cycle Speedway Club hosts the annual Chris Allen Memorial Trophy this Sunday (12th October) at 2pm at their Hearsall Common, Earlsdon, headquarters.

Won by Birmingham’s Mark Winwood 12 months ago, the meeting proved to be a popular event with riders who aim to gain some final track time before the season closes for the winter.

Winwood was a popular and deserved victor 12 months ago. He raced for Coventry in both 2012 and 2013 as a loan rider, helping Coventry to fully return to league racing after an absence of four years.

16 of the Midland`s best riders taking to track in a bid to win the event – which runs in memory of former 19 year old Coventry racer Chris Allen who tragically collapsed and died after a race at Hearsall Common in 1973.

Polish duo Dominik Rycharski and Konrad Pietak will mount a stern challenge for the coveted silverware, whilst a host of Coventry`s fast rising juniors such as Dan Drewett, Mason Phillips and Kyle Roberts are set to make their mark at senior level.

Coventry ended their senior campaign in style last weekend, defeating local rivals Leicester 103-79. `Boy Wonder` Kyle Roberts led the way with a sensational paid maximum – defeating former British number 3 and Coventry track specialist, Craig Marchant, along the way.

Popular new recruit Kelvin Williams was another to impress, the former Stoke rider dropped just two points on his way to an 18 point return whilst Charlie Barnett – who only took up the sport 12 months ago – picked up his first senior team heat win in impressive style.

Matthew Lawrence, who has returned to racing after an 8 year break, picked up a handy race win in his last ride on his way to 13 points – the same points score was accumulated by veteran racer, and Coventry skipper, Dave Frith.

Coventry were also victorious in the supporting Junior Challenge over their Leicester counterparts, racing to a 65-64 success.

Ollie Morris led the way with a faultless full 16 point maximum; he was backed up by Jake Slatter and Bailie Phillips. Other race winners for Coventry included Levi and Josh Walters.
