Wiggins To Lead Team Sky Into The Tour De France

Bradley Wiggins will lead Team Sky into their first ever Tour de France.

Manager David Brailsford announced the team today for the Tour which starts in Rotterdam on Saturday July 3rd.

Wiggins, who finished fourth in last year's tour, will be accompanied by Geraint Thomas, who made his TDF debut in the 2007 which started in London and Steve Cummings.

The rest of the Sky team is Michael Barry, Juan Antonio Flecha, Simon Gerrans, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Thomas Löfkvist and Serge Pauwels.

Brailsford said to www.cyclingnews.com about his team line up: "We have a blend of Tour experience and young talent that will help us to perform this year and continue to develop. The aim is to perform well, make a positive contribution to the Tour and help to get more people enjoying the sport. We want to inspire. And these nine riders will help us to do that."

There are twenty stages of the tour which ends in Paris and reports from the tour will appear on this site.

Britain's Jeremy Hunt has been named in the Carvelo Test Team for the Tour De France but Daniel Lloyd has only been listed as the reserve rider.

Hunt did plenty of work in the recent Giro D'Italia to earn his place in the team which includes Thor Hushovd, Brett Lancaster, and Carlos Sastre.

Charles Weglius has been selected for the Omega Lotta squad for the Tour De France.

The Finnish born but grew up in Yorkshire rider made his debut in the 2007 tour and rode for Dutch based Lotto in last year's tour.

The British National Road Race Championship which takes in Nelson is being shown by Eurosport on Sunday afternoon at 3pm. HTC Colombia's Mark Cavendish is just one Brit who will ride the race.



Speaking in London to www.cyclingnews.com, about the Tour De France before heading off to Manchester to prepare for the race, Cavendish who won six stage last year, said: "I think there are nine possible sprints. "If I don't win a stage I'll have failed. I want to win a stage. You have to be happy with any stage win at the Tour de France. But the green jersey is the goal this year, for me and the team - and I'm incredibly focused for it."

Coventry cyclist Mike Ives clinched his 69th British cycling championship last Saturday. The 70 year five times World Masters champion, who rides for Coventry based MI Racing team, teamed up with 73 year old Jack Watson to win the VTTA National Ten Mile Tandem Championship in Sedgefield, County Durham.

The Alan Higgs Centre at Allard Way in Coventry opens a new BMX track on Sunday.

The opening of the track is part of a fun day from 10am to 3pm organised by the City Council and the Coventry & Warwickshire partnership for the 2012 Olympic Games. Bikes will be provided for those wishing to try out the new track.
