Warwickshire County Cicket Club were set a target of 434 to win by the league leaders Yorkshire in their County Championship match at Edgbaston.
Yorks resumed on 123-1 and lost Leaning for 46, Gale for 1, Bairstow for 23 and Middlebrook for 2 with Australian Aaron Finch 73 not out before they declared on 289-7.
Warwicks needing 434 to win, batted but lost Varun Chopra without scoring for the second time in two innings when he was out to Ryan Sidebottom.
Warwicks ended the day on 43-1.
