Mark Cavendish had to settle for second place after Elia Viviani of Cannondale won the fifth stage of the Tour of Turkey.

Boem, Ferrari, Norris, Van Niekerk, De Maar, Sijmens, Pozzo & Tedeschi attacked straight away on a 183km stage from Marmaris to Bodrum.

They had built a lead of 4.16 but with 77kms to go, that was down to 2.43 and 2.10, twenty kilometres later.

In to the final thirty kilometres and the gap was now under a minute. De Maar and Tedeschi dropped back into the peloton which had leader Rein Taramae of Cofidis safely in the middle of the pack.

Omega Pharma Quick Step working to get Mark Cavendish a fourth win in this race worked hard on the front and with eight kilometres left, the escapers were caught.

Kudus, Canola and Kal briefly got away but for the last five kilometres, the peloton was altogether.

That meant a sprint but there was to be no victory for Cavendish as he was beaten to the line by Elia Viviani of Cannondale in 4.34.11 with Cavendish second and MTN's Kristian Sbaragli third.

Cavendish took his defeat well and tweeted: "as a mistake to launch my sprint from the front in a headwind today in the Tour of Turkey but I benefitted on the first stage launching from behind, so guess that's racing. Young Elia Viviani rode a perfect sprint so congratulations to him. "Super proud of Omega Pharma Quick Step again."

Cofidis' Rein Taramae continues to lead the race by six seconds from Adam Yates.
