Vasil Kiryienka Wins Giro Individual Time Trial

Alberto Contador was back in the pink as Vasil Kiryienka of Team Sky  won the 98th Giro D'Italia's Individual Time Trial.

The time trial on stage fourteen was over a 59.4km course from Treviso to  Valdobbiadene and saw Marco Coledan of Trek Factory Racing the first man down the ramp on a stage which took the riders into the Dolomites.

Orica GreenEdge's Michael Hepburn was the third rider to start but he finishes first and sets the fastest time of 1:21:05 on the line.

Maarten Tjallingii of LottoNL-Jumbo, Christopher Juul Jensen of Tinkoff-Saxo, Alexander Porsev of Katusha, Nikolay Mihaylov of CCC Polsat Polkowice, Chad Haga of Giant-Alpecin and Like Durbridge of Orica-GreenEdge all went quicker before Patrick Gretsch finished in 1.18.14 and Vasil Kiryienka of Team Sky came home in in 1.17.52 on wet roads.

With Richie Porte losing time on the road, Alberto Contador and Fabio Aru went down the ramp.

Contador, who was involved in a crash some three hundred metres outside the 3km mark on stage thirteen and lost the lead of the race, was determined to get back in pink and he started to put time into the race leader Fabio Aru from the start.

Porte finished in 1.22.12, 4.20 down and with his chances of winning the race almost over.

Contador was 1.45 ahead of Aru at the second checkpoint and fourth fastest after 49kms.

Rigoberto Uran finished in 21st place whilst Contador was dancing on the pedals and forcing his way through the crowds.

Aru was all over the road and was 2.30 down on Contador who came round to finish in 1.18.06 to finish third.

Aru finished in 1.20.53 and Vasil Kiryienka had won the stage and Contador was back in pink with a lead of 2.28.

"!It was a long and difficult wait for Contador," Kiryienka said. "It seemed like it was not going to go well but it did in the end.

"We were not very lucky with Richie but we have achieved a couple of results. It is difficult for the overall but we will fight for wins.
