Vakoc Wins Tour Of Poland Second Stage

Petr Vakoc of Omega Pharma Quick Step has won the second stage of the Tour of Poland.

On a 226km stage from Torun to the capital Warsaw, 164 riders set off and three in Petr Vakoc of Omega Pharma Quick Step,  Kasper Kasperkiewicz of the Polish National team and the Polish national road race champion Bartlomiej Matysiak of CCC Polsat took a lead of 2.30 on a day where temperatures were around the 28 degrees mark.

With 51kms left and after Vakoc, who was stung by a bee and had to consult a doctor, had taken the first sprint of the day in Kampinos, their lead was 6.54. 

Vakoc took another three seconds at the second sprint with 30kms remaining as the peloton moved to within 4.16 of the escapers thanks to the work of Tinkoff Saxo on the front.

Heading for three laps of a 4.8kms circuit around Warsaw, Vakoc was away on his own with a 2.51 lead.

Vakoc was 2.36 head going into the final eight kilometres and with the peloton only taking ten seconds back in the last three kilometres, Vakoc continued on his way along the cobbles and tarmac in front of good crowds.

Vakoc made certain that he took the biggest win of his career with a win in 5.22.54.

The peloton had no idea thar Petr Vakoc had won and Michael Matthews of Orica Green Edge went over the line, celebrating like he had taken the victory but he was second ahead of Vallee, Sinkledam and Hutarovich.

Petr Vakoc now leads the race going into stage three with a 27 second lead over Yauheni Hutarovich.
