Lampre's Diego Ullisi won the Milan-Turin race this afternoon.

Alberto Contador, was back to defend his 2012 title in a race that back in its second year after not being held from 2008-2011 but has a history dating back to 1874 when the race was first won by Italian Paolo Magretti, in a strong field that included Dan Martin but not Andy Schleck who had withdrawn with a sinus infection.

Jay Robert Thomson (MTN Qhubka) and Europcar's Bjorn Thurau were the first to show in this 193.5km race, getting away and building a lead of 1.25 after forty kilomeres and extending that to 6.50 after 94kms as the race entered the Vercelli Province.

The peloton started to bring them back and with just over forty kilometres left to race, the duo's time at the front was now a matter of 3.20 from a Saxo Tinkoff led peloton.

The race was now heading for the big climb of the day on the Pino Torinese and Thomson and Thurau had a ninety second lead.

Thirau dropped Thomason on the climb and decided to go solo in a bid to take the victory but with 20kms to go, he was caught and Kristijan Durasek of Lampre and Edoardo Zardini of Bardiani took over gaining a twenty second lead before they were reeled in by first Majka and Mendes and then what remained of the peloton.

There were about thirty riders left with six kilometres remaining. Rabottini attacked and then was caught and with three kilometres to go and Franco Pellizotti of Androni, Rafal Majka of Saxo Tinkoff and Pozzovivo of AG2R took over on the front, heading towards the finish on the Basilica Di Superga .

However, this trio could not keep their lead and Lampre's Diego Ullisi  took the win after catching the trio with Contador, Valverde and Moreno and won ahead of Majka and Dani Moreno of Katusha, followed by  Pozzovivo, Contador, Valverde, Finetto, Voeckler, Rabottini and Pellizotti.
