Tom Boonen Wins Eneco Tour Third Stage

Tom Boonen of Etixx Quick Step has taken victory on the third stage of the Eneco Tour.

Stage three was a 171.9km stage from Beveren to Ardooie which had Jesper Asselman of Roompot as its new leader.

David Boucher, Edward Theuns and Frederik Veuchelen formed the first break of the day and it was Theuns who took the first sprint after 16.6kms.

Forty four kilometres were completed in the first hour of racing by the trip who had taken a lead of 3.40.

After Matti Breschel had abandoned, suffering the effects of a stage two crash, the trio were 3.45 ahead with 95kms left.

Gorka Izagirre crashed with Houle with just under fifty kilometres left with the Movistar rider left feeling his head and then taken to hospital as the three up front were 2.44 ahead.

Theuns took the second sprint with 35kms left as Team Sky's Berni Eisel who was trialing some new disc brakes, spoke to the race commisaire.

Theuns took the first sprint in the Golden Kilometre and then took the second sprint and the third to take nine seconds and go six seconds off the overall lead.

The break was caught shortly after and Nathan Haas of Cannondale-Garmin tried to get away but was promptly brought to heel and for the final fifteen kilometre lap around Ardooie, the peloton were all together.

Into town and the batle was on with Lotto Soudal on the front despite Andre Greipel being down the road a bit.and in 3.54.25, it was Tom Boonen who cam down the middle to take the win ahead of .Arnaud Démare and Elia Viviani, followed by Guardini, Groenewegen , Greipel, Selig, Modolo, Danny van Poppel and Roy Jans.
