Hants won the toss and decided to bat with Michael Carberry making 36, Will Smith 43, Joe Gatting 43, Adam Wheater 57 and Gareth Berg as they closed on 255-8.
Boyd Rankin took 3-45 and Chris Woakes 2-19.
