Thomas Beaten In Pursuit Final

British Road Race Champion Geraint Thomas was beaten in the Mens Individual 4000m Pursuit final by Rohan Dennis of Australia on the opening day of the UCI World Track Championships in Manchester.



The British Road Race Champion was not the quickest in the opening three of the sixteen laps but turned it round and took the lead on the fourth lap. He was 1.4 seconds ahead at the 2000m mark. Thomas could not hold the pace he had shown in the qualifying round and started to tire and it was Dennis took the race in 4.15.

In the Women's 3000m Team Pursuit Final, Britain's Wendy Houvenagel, Sarah Storey and Joanne Rousell took on New Zealand. The trio which had set a new British Record this morning, led in opening kilometre and beat that time with a time of 3.19.75 new which was not only a British record but the fastest at sea level just 0.11 seconds off the World Record which was set at altitude.

Jess Varnish and Becky James became the first British woman to go under 19 seconds on the first lap of the Women's team sprint qualifiers. Riding for Sky Pro Cycling, they lost to Australia but were fourth best out of 20 teams and went in the Bronze medal race against France.

Brits Jason Kenny and Sir Chris Hoy met each other in the Sprint Semi-Finals. Kenny won both races to go to final v Kevin Sireau of France with Hoy going into Bronze medal race against Lavy of Germany which he won 2-0.

Kenny won the final race of the final but was pipped in the second. In the decider, Sireau got the start and was strong enough to hold off Kenny to get the gold medal.
