Marianne Vos became the Elite Women's Road Road World Champion for the third time with victory in Florence.

Only 44 riders finished the 139.6km stage from Montecatini Terme to Florence which took in five punishing laps around Fiesole and Via Salviati.

The American and Italian teams controlled things leaving about thirty riders in the lead group.

That was down to eleven riders as they approached the final lap. Britain's Lizzie Armitstead had got into the group but was shed a lap earlier.

On to the final climb of the climb of Via Salviati and Vos led over the top with just under four kilometres remaining.

Vos stayed away and won her second successive title in a time of 3.44.00, followed fifteen seconds later, by Emma Johansson (Sweden) and Rossella Ratto (Italy).
