Britain's Mark Cavendish finished third in the fourth stage of the AMGEN Tour Of California.

Today was a day for the sprinters and after they had got through the hills on the way from San Jose to Modesto and the initial breakway had been pulled back, it was always going to be a sprint finish.

Mark Cavendish was taken up to the front, working his way through the field but he could not get to Francesco Chicci of Liquigas who crossed the line ahead of JJ Haedo with the HTC Colombia rider in the third place.

Lance Armstrong crashed inside the 3km limit but was given the same time.

Garmin Transitions David Zabriskie keeps his leaders jersey for tomorrow's stage which ends in Bakersfield and starts in Visalia.

Bradley Wiggins finished fourth on Stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia.
