Team Sky's David Lopez won the sixth stage of the Eneco Tour but it was Argo Shimano's Tom Dumoulin who goes into the final stage with the leaders jersey.

A stage for the climbers on the 150km stage from Riemst to La Redoute, which scaled three times and ended with two laps of a 29.7km finishing circuit, saw Vyacheslav Kuznetsov (Katusha), Gregory Habeaux (Accent Jobs), Jurgen Van Goolen (Accent Jobs), Evan Huffman (Astana), Stijn Vandenbergh (Omega Pharma QuickStep), Angel Madrazo Ruiz (Movistar), David Lopez (Team Sky), Nick Nuyens (Garmin-Sharp), Pim Ligthart (Vacansoleil), Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil) and Maciej Paterski (Cannondale take a 7.15 minute lead after John Degenkolb and Lars Boom had taken the points at the first checkpoint sprint.

With just under 60kms to go, there was a big crash in the peloton which was split. Phillipe Gilbert was one of those on the ground as was Taylor Phinney who was forced to abandon with the World Champion admitting that he will now not ride the final stage.

Lieuwe Westra took the bonus sprint whilst the likes of Rasch and Phinney were receiving treatment.

Team Sky's Ian Stannard, De Veert, Wellens and Segeant broke clear of the peloton which was 4.23 down with 44kms to go to try and bring back the likes of Westa.

Lopez took the second sprint as Stybar, Chavenal, Dumoulin made the front group now chasing six riders, who were 1.25 ahead with 25kms of the stage left.

Lars Boom got up to the Chavanel, Gilbert, and Jonny Hoogerland group which was the third on the road and behind the group including Westra, Lopez, Madrazo, Paterski.

Boom cracked and dropped out of contention as Paterskii tried to attack with eight to go. Tom Dumoulin had brought his group to within 44 seconds of the front three and they continued to chase.

With three kilometres the gap was down to 25 seconds and into the final kilometre, the gap was negligable as Lopez, Madrazo and Paterski stayed in front.

David Lopez kicked and off he went to win the stage in 3.51.13 but up came Zdenek Stybar of Omega Pharma Quick Step to snatch second place ahead of Maciej Paterski.

Up came Dumoulin to finish fourth four seconds behind Lopez and take over the leaders jersey going into the final stage.

Dumoulin who leads Stybar by eight seconds said to his team's press office: “I had to work hard for it today. “I crashed before La Redoute but I stayed calm and was able to come back after a long chase.

“I actually felt really good, even after all the work done, so I decided to go with the Astana guys when they went. When we joined the group with Stybar (Omega Pharma – Quickstep) I came into a situation that I had to do all the work myself because there were not many riders that wanted to race.

“I had to save some energy for the final sprint as to not lose too much time to Stybar. Today was a big chance to take the race lead and I surprised myself.

“You never know what will happen tomorrow but I am really happy to have the jersey now and we will do everything we can to keep it tomorrow.”
