Coventry Cycle Speedway Club were boosted with the news this weekend that girl racer Sammi Marsh won the 2014 Women’s League Individual Championship at Sheffield for her respective intermediate category.
The 14 year old Ash Green schoolgirl started racing competitively just two years ago, now she’s a national star and has improved week by week. Marsh finished the meeting on 15 points, tied with Leicester rival – and close friend – Elizabeth Rigley.
This forced a run-off between the two East Midland rivals. From the favourable inside gate position, Marsh led heading into the first bend and rode arguably the best four laps of her life to secure her first ever national title.
In the process of winning, Marsh only dropped a single point in becoming the first Coventry rider to win a national final since the club were formed in 1978. After the meeting, a delighted Marsh said “I love racing my bike and my win is by far the best achievement of my Cycle Speedway career so far.
“Everyone at the club has congratulated me which is a real confidence boost. We’ve trained hard this season and our coach Myke Grimes has made me really improve as the season has gone on.
“There’s not much more racing left this season but I will be competing at the indoor championships where hopefully I can reach my first ever British Indoor Final.”
Away from the glory of Women’s racing, Coventry take on near neighbours Leicester at Hearsall Common this Sunday (5th October) in senior team and junior matches. The action starts at 2pm and admission is free to all spectators.
Coventry have rested their three best riders – Konrad Pietak, Myke Grimes and Dominik Rycharski – and have promoted several younger riders to give them experience of first team racing.
